Libby is a reading app for accessing digital content from the library's OverDrive collection. This free app, created by OverDrive, is available for Android and iOS (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch) devices. Libby is highly recommended if you're new to digital borrowing. If you like Libby, you won't need to use any other library app for ebooks and eaudiobooks.

Unfortunately, PDF eBooks are not supported by the OverDrive app. If you've borrowed a PDF eBook from the library, you can download it to the free Adobe Digital Editions software on a Windows or Mac computer, then transfer it to a compatible eReader.

The Libby app gives you the option to send your ebooks to your preferred Kindle device. For detailed instructions on how to borrow Kindle Books from the library, see the "How to get Kindle eBooks from OverDrive." OverDrive eBooks can also be read on all Kindle devices or by using the free Kindle apps available for Windows/OS, iPhone/iPad (iOS), Android, and other mobile devices. Check out the Kindle How-To videos to find out more. You can also find useful information at the Amazon Help Page on how to checkout and download Kindle compatible eBooks.See the eBook Software Requirements Chart for more information.

OverDrive discontinued its native (original) app to focus on Libby, its newer app. If you have the native app installed, it may continue to work for a short time. But we strongly suggest that you switch to the Libby app.

The book does not disappear from your bookshelf unless you delete it from your bookshelf. If it's a multi user title, you can access the book at the same time as another user.

You can read all ebooks online without downloading. Some ebooks are set up for downloading and others are not downloadable. Many of our ebooks require specific software to download: Adobe Digital Editions for your computer, or Bluefire for your mobile device. Ebooks come in a variety of formats. Two of the most popular are PDF and ePUB. Sometimes you have the option to choose which format you want. Older PDFs are not reflowable so as to properly accomodate smaller screen sizes like those on a mobile device. So, if you are having trouble with the document fitting properly within your screen, try using an epub file if you have that option. Newer PDFs and various apps are designed to fix this problem.

When we are talking of free eBook apps, there is no way we can miss out mentioning Kindle. It is by far one of the most popular book reading apps. You can signup & download it here. and read a lot of free books that span nearly all categories from romance to fiction, non-fiction, historical and more.

You can play with the size and color of the font. Not only this, if you are unable to comprehend the meaning of any word, you have an easy dictionary lookup feature as well. The best thing about Google play is the fact that you can easily download books for free and make a quick purchase too.

If you are an Apple user, this is most likely to be the default book reading app on your device. The designing of this app is very elegant which means that you will find it to be clutter free. One of the reasons I like to keep formatting in my control is because we often change our ebooks over time. Every time I put out a new book in a series, I want to update the back matter of the previous books with links to the new book.

But it is Mac only. So, if you are on a PC, then you can use Scrivener for formatting, since many writers already have Scrivener as a writing tool. There are plenty of free tutorials online and I also recommend the Learn Scrivener Fast course which includes lots of mini videos on the functionality that will help speed up your writing and publishing process.

You can publish on Amazon KDP as well as all the other platforms, but Amazon also offers KDP Select, which is a specific service that you can opt into for 90 day periods. It means that your books will be included in Kindle Unlimited, a subscription service for Amazon Prime members, where the books are more likely to be borrowed by readers. There are other advantages around free promotion days or countdown deals. You are paid based on pages read from a pot of money shared between authors at the end of each month.

If you go direct, you have greater control over pricing and metadata per store. There are also specific promo opportunities on some stores that are not available if you go through an aggregator. However, I will admit that it takes time to manage publishing and updating all my books on all the different platforms every time I want to make a change.

If you're going to self-publish ebooks or you are already selling them, then I do recommend that you buy an ebook reader or at least try reading an ebook on one of the many free apps. You need to understand the mindset of an ebook reader as well as their online experience. I read 99% ebooks these days, mostly on the Kindle Paperwhite and my iPhone Kindle app. I mostly download samples before buying, unless I know and trust the author. I also have preferences around pricing, and you will pick these things up if you try reading digitally.

In Dec 2014, a law was brought in across the EU that meant sales of digital products, including ebooks, would now be subject to Value Added Tax based on the country of the customer, not the supplier. The law was aimed at stopping companies like Amazon, Google and Apple from situating their companies in countries with specific tax breaks to lower their tax in other countries. But of course, it hit every author and small business selling digitally. This tax is now spreading to other countries, so we can assume it will be part of the global digital marketplace going forward.
